Mid Week Blues

The shop was supposed to have a good number of items listed today, but I came home from a busy morning to a power outage.  Thankfully, the power came on after a couple of hours.  But, while I was trying to load all my photos, my computer froze and then somehow erased all of the photos I needed for the shop update both on my camera and the computer.  I can't find them anywhere.  So, this short shop update will have to do for today and I will be back with hopefully LOTS of new goodies tomorrow night.  Thanks for your patience.  Also, the shop is having a 48 hour sale until the beginning of March, so enjoy that at least please!

On a brighter note, isn't the color palette pretty?  You can click the link to my shop to the right of my blog.  I have many more neutrals and pastels coming, so stay tuned.  Also, many many pretty shoes.

Home Edition

The more vintage I hunt for the shop, the more I buy for the home.  Is this the case for other sellers?  I haven't made huge purchases yet, due to the budget, but I keep finding smaller items that seem to make a big difference in the decor.

1. Old dried flowers from my husband about 7 years ago.
2. Trio of vintage vases.
3. My vanity full of vintage jewelry, boxes, buttons, and hats.
4. 1930s reprints of P.J. Redoute prints.
5. Vintage photo frame next to a mix of vintage and modern books.

As time passes, I'd like to find a vintage coffee table, shelves, mirrors, credenza, wall hangings and the list goes on and on.  Decorating the home, however, is very low on my priority list and probably will be unless I miraculously have self-sufficient kids, a clean home, and an assistant/nanny/maid.

A Peek Into My Morning

I'm borrowing this idea from Bleubird Blog.  However, mine will not chronicle the entire day, but just my mornings. All pictures were taken with my iphone. What are your mornings like?

A Picture An Hour

8 am

Planning the week ahead during breakfast with the kids
9am
Finishing up a little snack before we go out. (yes, my kids snack right after breakfast. haha.)

10 am
My dry cleaning guy keeps a pet chameleon in his shop.  My son loves going with me to the dry cleaners so he can see it!

11 am
My kids love the book section when we go thrifting.

One of my favorite corners at one of my favorite thrift shops.
12 pm
Story time before nap/quiet time.  Can you guess which book this is?
1 pm
Waiting for the right sunlight to start photographing items for the shop!

The first is having some quiet time playing in his room right now and the 2nd one is still napping.  After that, it gets too crazy and tiring for me to even attempt to photograph.

Valentine's Day Outfits

My daughter was not being cooperative again.

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!  I usually don't dress up for holidays, but I decided to today AND take pictures of our outfits!

This vintage 1960s dress WAS going to go in the shop, but one side of the dress was pretty faded, and I didn't catch that when I purchased it.  I don't usually like hemming vintage, but I'm only 5'2" (on a good day) and dresses that hit right below my knee really shorten my frame. So, I hemmed it a little and now it's mine!  Southern CA has hit the 70s today, so I thought what a perfect day to wear my "new" dress.

I also dressed my kiddos up in Valentine's Day colors since my son had a Valentine's party at his school and my daughter likes pink anyways.  Unfortunately, I have no idea where my kids' clothes are from because they were all gifts.  I rarely buy clothes for the kids because their aunts, uncles, and grandparents shower them with presents and love often.

Hope everyone feels loved today.

The Backlash against Being an Educated Mother

My blog tends to focus on non-controversial topics because that was the focus of the blog- fun, fashion, and vintage.  I still intend to target these topics, while inserting some more serious thoughts that reflect my lifestyle and thoughts.

Here are some things readers may not know about me.  I graduated 2nd in my high school class.  I received a BA in English from UC Berkeley and an MA in Teaching from UC Irvine. I was a damn good middle school teacher.  It sounds like I'm tooting my own horn, and maybe I am.  I'm listing these because I've had so many people, mostly women, question why I decided to stay at home and "waste" my education.  These women range from relatives to close friends to acquaintances.  Recently someone had enough thoughtless gall to question if they would ever be a SAHM (stay at home mom) after all the great education I received.

Since when did being educated become a bad thing?  Am I not able to return to the job field after my kids go to school? Am I being a bad mother for staying at home and having these degrees?  Am I not contributing to society by raising children who are well behaved, thoughtful, morally sound, and our future? Would you rather me be a 16 year old raising a child without receiving an education?  Am I not creating a brighter future for my kids because I set the example of receiving an education?

Maybe being educated is not the bad thing, but what people are criticizing is my, actually our (referring to the husband here) choice to have a parent raise their own children.  Once again, I will return to the power of rhetorical questions.  Is having a parent raise their own child a bad thing?  Is staying at home for a short period of time (in the grand scheme of things) a waste of life? I strongly believe the answer to these two questions is no.  I am not saying that being a SAHM is the best way or the only way to raise children.  Every family has different needs specific for their family.  My family decided that the cost to provide full time child care was just not enough for me to be a full time working mom.  Financially, this decision has taken a toll and we may be forced to reevaulate what our family needs in the future.  But, for now, being a SAHM with a part time online business is what we've decided as the best route.  I'm simply saying that people should stop looking down on me, and other mothers like me, like I'm wasting my potential or my life by staying at home with the kids during these critical developmental years.

Somehow, the media generated a stereotype of SAHM to be women who do nothing but gossip, shop, and lounge around all day.  Unfortunately, there are many cases where this is true.  But, I'm a driven, educated woman that runs a business and a blog while running a household.  Please don't tell me I'm wasting my education because I guarantee you that my discipline and drive from my former school years are what's helping me to fulfill my role as a mother now and will guide me in the future if and when I decide to return to teaching or if I decide to pursue my vintage business full time or anything else I decide to do. I have options because I'm educated.

Give Me A W!

W for winner that is.  First, I wanted to thank all those who entered the giveaway and for all the new likes and follows.  I really appreciate the support.  Secondly, I wanted to apologize for not posting the winner sooner.  I just got over the flu last week, and then was hit with a stomach bug on Sunday.  Please take care of yourselves this flu season!

Before I announce the winner, here are some fun vintage pictures of cheerleaders.  My readers don't know, but I'm actually a pretty big football fan and love watching the Super Bowl.  This year, my husband and I stayed low key because my son had a birthday party this past Saturday.  I was up from 6 am attending some sales, then getting the party ready, and then guests didn't leave until 9 pm.  Needless to say, we were partied out.

While watching the Super Bowl, I wondered how cheerleaders dressed 40, 50 years ago.  Here are some pictures I found browsing the internet.
